Starknet is a permissionless Validity-Rollup, also known as Ethereum's Zero-Knowledge Rollup (ZK Rollup). It operates as a layer 2 (L2) blockchain, enabling any dApp to achieve large-scale computation without compromising Ethereum’s composability and security. Starknet tokens are a mechanism for paying fees to operate the network, maintain and secure the network by supporting consensus, and determine Starknet's values and technical goals by voting on governance proposals. Transaction Fees: Initially, fees in Starknet will only be paid in Ethereum (ETH). Starting with v.0.13.0, transaction fees on the network can be paid using Starknet tokens as well as Ethereum. Staking: Certain services critical to the activity and security of Starknet may require staking of Starknet tokens. These services may be provided by multiple providers and may include ordering, temporary L2 consensus before reaching L1 finality, STARK attestation services, and data availability configuration, etc. These protocol changes are still being discussed within the larger governance community and are targeted for 2024-2025. Governance: Proposals to improve Starknet may require a minimum token support threshold. Voting, either directly or through delegation, is required for protocol changes that are critical to the liveness, security, and maintenance of Starknet.
